Of course not, but I love it for what it is. The Gathering's Mandylion was truly a landmark release of epic proportions if there ever was one. Surprisingly catchy and not quite instantly accessible but its good enough to give anyone who isn't insistent on pure speed in their music something to think about.

Gathering - Mandylion - Music
The Gathering's heavy yet simplified and incredibly atmospheric sound is an excellent combination with Anneke's charming yet NEVER over the top vocals. I would say that this is one of my all-time favorite albums. The production is reasonably clear yet carries enough echo to envelope the music with a haunting and somewhat cavernous allure.

The keyboards add extra atmosphere to the guitar parts. When The Gathering realized they weren't mandylikn in using harsh vocals anymore, they decided to go a more unorthodox choice; Neils Duffhues, the nasally and out-of-key lead singer that performed on their Almost a Dance album.
Perhaps it was the heavy usage of weird sounding synthesizers and introspective lyrics over top of death metal riffs, or the eerie and considerably un-trained female singing. There's a problem loading this menu right now.
Not because people hated them but because they mostly came off as a gimmick to try to bolster otherwise mediocre albums. I hate to say that people shouldn't focus all their mandy, ion on the vocals as this is a female fronted band and that is how people generally tend to operate, but I cannot harp on enough over Anneke's beautiful voice.

Opeth In Cauda Venenum. It's definitely a huge step up from the bland, high-pitched backing female vocals that the band had selected in their earlier releases, as well as the harsh male counterparts.

gatbering But whenever I say out loud what I think of Anneke and The Gathering with Anneke the The gathering fanboys and girls also start crying and shouting and hurling profanities at my head I can easily sit through the whole album because music-wise it's quite good. While The 3rd and the Mortal from Norway had already taken on the style of melodic doom metal with gentle female singing, The Gathering mandhlion its warm ethereal atmosphere into the style, which helped them to avoid sounding too much like the Norwegian doomsters.
Other standout tracks include Strange Machines, Eleanor, Fear The Sea but as far as I'm concerned this is not important because each track is excellent. Mandylion was the album in which the band seemed to realize that these two aspects were what made them groundbreaking and original. It doesn't help that the music just sounds plodding and pedestrian. Amazon Second Chance Pass it on, trade it in, give it a second life. Well I'm sad to report those fears came true as that's a very apt description of Mandylion.
Unlike most female Goth metal, Anneke does not sound overdramatic. It is then extremely difficult for me to transcend my made up reality and realize just how little gothic these albums really are, despite however, and that should be stressed, their impact into the formative years of that scene. While nothing wrong with that, it's antithetical to a good metal record.

The Gathering went through a major shake up during this period and introduced tthe fans to the new face of the band, Anneke van Giersbergen, who went on to turn around the fortunes of mandylioj band who were gaining some criticism over their previous two full-length releases. What defines The Gathering's sound is mostly distorted, melodic riffs which alternate between quite heavy chord based guitar riffs and beautiful guitar harmonies.
Mancylion, no other song has this issue, though there is a tendency to explore freely that may irk those less given to wandering from conventional structures. Gothic metal is a very divisive genre which has spawned many female-fronted cookie cutter bands in the years to come.
If you love her voice like I do, recommend checking out her work with Devin Townsend. Imagine simple yet catchy guitar patterns similar to Black Sabbath.
